COVID-19 Prevention and Care Tips

Staying Safe and Healthy: COVID-19 Prevention and Care Tips

The COVID-19 pandemic has reshaped how we approach public health, hygiene, and personal wellness. While we've come a long way with vaccines, treatments, and awareness, COVID-19 is still part of our lives and prevention remains key.

Whether you're trying to avoid infection or recover safely at home, here's what you need to know.

What Is COVID-19?

COVID-19 is a respiratory illness caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. It spreads through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks and it can linger on surfaces or in the air in poorly ventilated spaces.

Symptoms can vary but may include:

  • Fever or chills

  • Cough or sore throat

  • Fatigue or body aches

  • Loss of taste or smell

  • Shortness of breath

  • Headache

  • GI symptoms (nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea)

COVID-19 Prevention: What Still Works

While COVID-19 may feel like “old news,” prevention is still crucial especially for those at higher risk. Here’s how to stay protected:

1. Stay Up to Date with your Health

Vitamins, supplements, healthy eating, and keeping active help prevent severe illness, hospitalization, and long-term complications. Boost your immune system with Vitamin C, curcumin, and zinc which are available at any health food store can help and recommended health boosters, especially for older adults and those with chronic health conditions.

2. Wash Hands Regularly

Handwashing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds kills viruses. Hand sanitizer with 60% alcohol is a good backup when you're on the go. Try to avoid contact with door handles and surfaces that may be contaminated, use barriers if possible.

3. Wear a Mask in Crowded or High-Risk Settings

Masks are still effective, especially in healthcare settings, on public transportation, crowded venues, and during outbreaks.

✅ 4. Ventilate Indoor Spaces

Open windows and use fans or air purifiers to reduce airborne particles indoors. Change filters often.

✅ 5. Stay Home if You’re Sick

Don’t “push through it.” If you have symptoms, prevent the spread of COVID-19 and rest at home to protect others.

What To Do If You Test Positive

If you test positive for COVID-19:

1. Isolate

Stay home and avoid contact with others, even household members, for at least 5 full days. Use a separate bedroom and bathroom if possible.

2. Monitor Symptoms

Keep track of breathing, oxygen levels (with a pulse oximeter), and temperature. If symptoms worsen, contact your provider immediately.

3. Stay Hydrated and Rested

Drink fluids, get plenty of rest, and nourish your body with immune-boosting foods.

4. Use Over-the-Counter Relief

Fever reducers, cough medications, and pain relievers can help you feel more comfortable.

5. Consider Antiviral Treatments

If symptoms persist or worsen contact your provider to see if you're eligible for antiviral treatment such as Paxlovid or other antiviral medications, which can shorten illness and reduce severity especially if you're high-risk.

Post-COVID Care: Don’t Ignore Lingering Symptoms

Some patients experience “long COVID” symptoms lasting weeks or months after infection. These may include fatigue, brain fog, shortness of breath, joint pain, or mood changes. If symptoms persist, speak to your provider. Early care can make a big difference in recovery.
